Experts in the field of child development, grief, bereavement, and child safety have guided Tuesday’s Children to build a well-established and highly impactful Long-Term Mentoring Program that can change the trajectory of a child’s life. Mentors can offer advice, share life experiences, help a young person navigate challenges, and have fun!
Volunteer mentors are recruited, screened, trained, and managed/supervised by professional staff to safeguard that every adult is committed to and qualified for playing an active role in the nurturing of a child. We work with military families to ensure that both you and your child are prepared for the commitment to the program.
Matches between a mentor and a child are made based on common interests, personality traits, and similar schedules. Participation in the program is intended to last a year or longer and entry between the ages of 6-16 is recommended.
When a child loses a parent or sibling following military service, the need for another trusted adult is powerful. This is where Tuesday’s Children steps in to help connect your young person with a screened, trained adult mentor who, while not replacing the lost loved one, is a caring role model, committed to being a positive agent of change in a child’s life.
Mentoring pairs spend several hours a month together, either virtually, in person, or a combination. The Tuesday’s Children team will provide training and guidance and the decision of how to spend time together is up to the mentor and child. Typical activities include: volunteering, preparing a meal, gaming, painting, taking a field trip, or attending sporting or arts events. Parents/guardians are engaged throughout the match relationship.
Volunteer mentors tell us their lives have been enriched and changed for the better because of their friendship with the Gold Star youth they are privileged to mentor. Adults who have had their own loss journey are often excellent mentors.
A thorough selection and training process ensures volunteers who are committed to the unique needs of bereaved children are prepared for their mentoring role. These dedicated volunteers are supported and nurtured by a professional staff to ensure a safe, caring environment for the youth, and a positive experience for the mentor, as well.
Tuesday’s Children continues to keep the promise because of the dedication of supporters who support our program, most notably through financial contributions or in-kind donations. Reach out to us today and share your support: mentoring@tuesdayschildren.org
Tuesday’s Children’s Youth Mentoring Programs began 20 years ago to serve children who lost someone on 9/11, and we are honored to extend our long-term healing model to those whose fallen loved ones answered the call to military service post-9/11.
