Mentoring

Mentoring

jim and nicholas2Serving the greater New York tri-state region, this program is designed to encourage and support mutually beneficial, long-standing relationships between adult role model and children ages 7 to 18.  Mentoring relationships enable children to grow emotionally and socially, build resilience and develop coping skills while encouraging them to make healthy choices.  Mentors and children engage in community-based activities twice a month, for a minimum of one year.  Events designed to encourage group dynamics, team building and community service are scheduled quarterly.  To date, almost 200 children have participated in the Youth Mentoring Program.

Tuesday's Children identifies and recurits mentors through corporations, civic organizations and local media.  All mentor candidates undergo thorough background and reference checks and, prior to being assigned, mentors receive special training in childhood development and the stages of grief.  The program was designed with the National Mentoring Partnership and Dr. Jean Rhodes, a widely published expert on youth mentoring and a consultant on the program.

63% of our mentoring matches exceed the minimum commitment of one year, which surpasses the national match length average.

Over 90% of children/adolescents who responded to our targeted survey indicated that they felt listened to and cared about by their mentor and that they had developed a caring and trusting relationship with their mentor.

Of the parents/guardians who responded to the survey 97% reported that they believe the mentor provided a positive role model for their children.

With the support of Tuesday's Children, matches participate in group outings to build community and share new experiences.

Career Paths

Career Paths

career_paths_2

This initiative engages teens and preteens early and often. Starting with enrichment programs for middle school children, the guidance continues, preparing adolescents for college and careers through interactive workshops, seminars, and leadership programs.

We offer later stage career planning workshops and counseling for students graduating from college and parents re-entering the workforce, assistance with preparing resumes and cover letters, and coaching on interview techniques, all of which help individuals strenghten their job-search process.  In addition to workshops, we offer one-on-one education and career guidance in person, via email and by phone, providing assistance regardless of location.

career_paths_1We partner with respected organizations to develop targeted programs for college admissions planning, including Howard Greene & Associates and Fordham University.  We assist students interested in exploring college and internship opportunities, actively engaging them in the process, sharing the knowledge and tools needed to manage their own careers throughout their lives.

Take Our Children to Work Day

Take Our Children to Work Day

Realizing the importance of involving the children who lost a parent on September 11th in the national Take Our Children to Work Day program, Tuesday's Children wanted to be a part of this day, not only for its members to explore possible career choices, but also so that these bereaved children would not be left out, as their friends and classmates joined their father or mother in this annual program.

In partnership with a diverse group of organizations, Tuesday's Children's Take Our Children to Work Day program is held each year.  This program offers a unique opportunity to participate in a valuable workplace experience that allows a young person to envision their future through a pratical, hands-on work day at a venue of their choosing.  Since its inception, over 700 children and 63 corporate partners have come together for a day of opportunity, creativity and inspiration.

Helping Heals

Helping Heals

Through Helping Heals, Tuesday's Children has instituted international, domestic and local community service programs for both teens and adults.  Through Rustic Pathways, our teen population has volunteered in impoverished communities in Costa Rica.  Tuesday's Children teens traveled to New Orleans and have participated in Habitat for Humanity's post-Katrina rebuilding efforts.  In addition, both adults and teens have participated in local community service projects through New York Cares and Children for Children.

Research indicates that giving something back to the community helps improve psychological mental health.  Dr. Marylene Cloitre, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU Child Study Center and a member of our Professional Advisory Board, said, "Those who engage in volunteer work experience a significant improvement in emotional well-being, self esteem, self worth and self efficacy.  Importantly, volunteers develop a greater sense of purpose in life, achieve increased mastery over their lives and improved life satisfaction."

HelpingHeals

Rather than spend their school break with their friends, 22 teens spent the week helping others by building houses with Bay-Waveland Habitat for Humanity in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi in February of 2011.

During the week, the teens met the recipient of the home who visited the site daily. They got to know who they were hammering for, who would be living in the house. They were able to make a real connection.

When the teens were asked what they gained from the experience, Chelsea responded "new friends, new skills and an understanding of how one week of your time, can change someone else's life." Meagan shared "it made me thankful for the things I have at home."

Getting Well/Staying Well

Getting Well/Staying Well

This initiative provides mental health services to children and families impacted by the events of September 11, 2001 and bridges mental health services to our wellness programs.  Psychologists and therapists from various organizations consult with our program managers on mental health considerations in the development and delivery of programming; provide training to staff about the signs and symptoms of trauma and grief and appropriate response to them; participate in the delivery of wellness programs; and provide appropriate referral, counseling and follow-through.

Getting Well/Staying Well also offers programs that provide tools and resources for adult family members to help develop a new perspective on their lives, enhance skills and abilities, and focus their energies positively toward the future.  Tuesday’s Children engages leading experts in their fields to design and conduct these programs and activities. Topics include Parenting Skills, Health and Wellness, and Financial Management programs.

Testimonials

I am so grateful for having had the opportunity to participate in the Tuesday’s children parenting workshop, ParentCorps. This program provided the tools that have enabled me and my girls to work together in learning to cope and move forward in a positive direction. We were so fortunate to have access to the caliber of experts working on this program. They worked closely with me and my girls and put the power to make this family succeed in our hands. A gift for which I am extremely grateful. This program can only be a positive experience for anyone who enrolls." - Participant

“Our lives cannot be fixed – but we each have the opportunity to create a life that is meaningful for us. Tuesday’s Children’s Life Management Program taught us many ways to do just that in a safe and supportive environment. Through this program and the work of our facilitators and coaches, we found a bit of light shining through that dark tunnel." - Participant

“This program has helped me develop a more positive attitude about the different challenges that lay ahead and gave me the tools to meet these challenges. I have more confidence in day to day decision making that affects my family – especially when it comes to matters regarding my children. I have better self esteem and am leaning to once again trust my intuition. - Participant

Who We Are

Tuesday’s Children has made a long-term commitment to meet the needs of every individual impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. We provide support at each and every stage of life through innovative, needs-based programs and mental health support. Our international initiative, Project Common Bond unites young people from around the globe to share their common experience of losing a loved one in a terrorist act, to heal together, and to learn important leadership and peace-building skills. Tuesday's Children's strength is building community which has a profound and positive impact on collective healing.

What We Do

Tuesday's Children creates programs that bring together children and families whose lives have been dramatically altered by an act of terrorism. Our programs include: Family Engagement; Mentoring; Child, Adolescent and Young Adult Programs; Helping Heals; Adult Programs; Project Common Bond; Counseling Services and the First Responder Alliance. More on our programs...

Who We Serve

In any tragedy, we memorialize those who are lost; but we must never lose sight of, and do all we can for, those who are left, for they are our most important living memorials, and can become our most valuable ambassadors.  Tuesday's Children serves all members of the 9/11 community including, but not limited to, children, spouses and young adults.  We link families with similar experiences, which has a profound and positive impact on their collective healing.

In recent years, we have expanded to provide programs, advocacy, workshops and counseling services to rescue and recovery workers such as policemen, firemen, volunteers and their families through the First Responder Alliance.

We have globally extended our services with Project Common Bond, a program designed to bring together international communities of young adults whose lives were drastically affected by acts of terrorism.
