Child, Adolescent, and Young Adult Programs
These programs address the very important developmental needs of children who have been impacted by a traumatic loss throughout their lifetime. Starting with age appropriate, interactive enrichment and engagement activities for the youngest children, we implement programs that enhance life skills and social connections. Our successful youth program, Career Paths, helps prepare adolescents for college and careers through interactive workshops, seminars and leadership development programs.

We offer later stage career planning workshops and counseling for students graduating from college, assistance with preparing resumes and cover letters, and coaching on interview techniques, all of which help individuals strengthen their job search process. We partner with respected organizations to develop targeted programs for college admissions planning, including Howard Green & Associates and Fordham University.
We assist students interested in exploring college and internship opportunities, actively engaging them in the process, sharing the knowledge and tools needed to manage their own careers throughout their lives. In addition to workshops, we offer one-on-one education and career guidance, in person, via email and by phone, providing assistance regardless of location.

An outgrowth of our Career Paths program, Take Our Children to Work Day, is conducted annually for children ages 8 -18 offering a close up look at organizations and careers of interest, helping them visualize their future.

Paticipation in this program increases each year. Since its inception, nearly 1,000 children, 63 corporate partners, and our entire staff have come together for a day of inspiration, creativity and opportunity.

Helping Heals

Through Helping Heals, Tuesday's Children has instituted international, domestic and local community service programs for both teens and adults.  Through Rustic Pathways, our teen population has volunteered in impoverished communities in Costa Rica.  Tuesday's Children teens traveled to New Orleans and have participated in Habitat for Humanity's post-Katrina rebuilding efforts.  In addition, both adults and teens have participated in local community service projects through New York Cares and Children for Children.

Research indicates that giving something back to the community helps improve psychological mental health.  Dr. Marylene Cloitre, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU Child Study Center and a member of our Professional Advisory Board, said, "Those who engage in volunteer work experience a significant improvement in emotional well-being, self esteem, self worth and self efficacy.  Importantly, volunteers develop a greater sense of purpose in life, achieve increased mastery over their lives and improved life satisfaction."

Rather than spend their school break with their friends, 22 teens spent the week helping others by building houses with Bay-Waveland Habitat for Humanity in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi in February of 2011.

During the week, the teens met the recipient of the home who visited the site daily. They got to know who they were hammering for, who would be living in the house. They were able to make a real connection.

When the teens were asked what they gained from the experience, Chelsea responded "new friends, new skills and an understanding of how one week of your time, can change someone else's life." Meagan shared "it made me thankful for the things I have at home."

Family Engagement
We hold Family Engagement events in various locations throughout the tri-state area to enhance resilience by building relationships among 9/11 families and resuce and recovery workers and their families, creating positive new traditions, and introducing Tuesday's Children's programming. By establishing a relationship and building a level of trust with our families in a safe and comfortable context, we gain the acceptance of the families and their participation in much-needed services and programs. We have hosted partnered events with many influential organizations over the years, including ice skating events with the New York Islanders, basketball events with the New York Knicks, special event initiatives with the New York Giants, and family baseball events with the New York Mets.

Mentoring
Serving the greater New York tri-state region, this program is designed to encourage and support mutually beneficial, long-standing relationships between adult role models and children ages 7 to 18.  Mentoring relationships enable children to grow emotionally and socially, build resilience and develop coping skills while encouraging them to make healthy choices.  Mentors and children engage in community-based activities twice a month, for a minimum of one year.  Events designed to encourage group dynamics, team building and community service are scheduled quarterly.  To date, almost 200 children have participated in the Youth Mentoring Program.  p1010875

Tuesday's Children identifies and recruits mentors through corporations, civic organizations and local media.  All mentor candidates undergo thorough background and reference checks and, prior to being assigned, receive special training in childhood development and the stages of grief.  The program was designed with the National Mentoring Partnership and Dr. Jean Rhodes, a widely published expert on youth mentoring and a consultant on the program.

63% of our mentoring matches exceed the minimum commitment of one year, which surpasses the national match length average.

Over 90% of children/adolescents who responded to our targeted survey indicated that they felt listened to and cared about by their mentor and that they had developed a caring and trusting relationship with their mentor.
Of the parents/guardians who responded to the survey, 97% reported that they believe the mentor provided a positive role model for their children.

Become a Tuesday's Children Mentor!

Tuesday’s Children’s Mentoring program, as you know, has been tremendously successful and beneficial to so many. To date we have matched nearly 200 of our young people with committed and qualified mentors. There are currently four children waiting patiently to find dedicated adult role models in their local community, and we need your help to find them.
If we find these five mentors we will have met the needs of every child in the program!

Those waiting are:

  • 13 year-old boy in Ocean, NJ (Would love a mentor who is young and active so they can play sports. His brother has had a mentor for over six years and while he loves spending time with them, he would love to have a dedicated mentor as well.)
  • 12 year old girl in Valley Stream, NY (She is looking for a mentor who is adventurous and willing to try new things. She would like to learn how to cook with a mentor!)
  • 8 year old boy in Inwood, NY (He is looking for a young, active mentor who can teach him how to play sports. He wants to learn how to do new things and would like a mentor to experience it with him).

We match every volunteer with a child who lives within a 30-minute radius of the volunteer’s home or office. They are asked to make a commitment of visiting with the child twice a month for at least a year but hopefully longer. The screening process includes an in-person interview, reference checks, background screenings and trainings. We strive to support each match and will provide helpful tools and techniques as well as quarterly outings with other Tuesday’s Children matches.
