Frequently Asked Questions About the Tuesday’s Children Mentoring Program

Q:          What is a Community-Based Mentoring program?

A:           The Tuesday’s Children community-based mentoring program builds positive, caring relationships between adult role models who are 18 years of age or older and children ages 6 to 16 who lost a parent/loved on September 11th.  We match adult Mentors with children who live within a 30-minute commute from the adults’ homes.  Mentors and mentees engage in activities like playing basketball in the child’s home, working together on problem solving skills, attending professional sporting events, doing homework together, getting a slice of pizza and talking about books they’ve read, or volunteering in the community. Tuesday’s Children also organizes quarterly group events for program participants.

Q:          What qualities and characteristics do you look for in a Mentor?

A:           Tuesday’s Children is looking for positive, active and caring adult Mentors who must be able to make a one-year commitment to the program.  A valid drivers license is required.  A Mentor is someone who is a good listener, trustworthy, enthusiastic, friendly, caring, responsible, able to show an interest in a child’s life, and likes to have fun.

Q:          What kind of time commitment would I have to make?

A:           As mentioned earlier, a Mentor must make a commitment for a minimum of one year.  The Mentor must also meet with the child twice a month either at the child’s home or in the community (days, times and locations are up to you).

Q:          Where does Tuesday’s Children have Mentoring programs?

A:           Tuesday’s Children has mentoring programs in Long Island, Hudson Valley, West Point, Staten Island, New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut

Q:          How can I get involved?

A:           The Tuesday’s Children Mentoring Team would be happy to discuss enrolling you in our program.  Mentors must undergo a thorough screening process that includes a volunteer application, request for multiple references, proof of car insurance, fingerprints for complete background check, and an in-depth interview with a Mentor Coordinator.  All approved Mentors will receive special training prior to being matched with a child.

Q:          Why should I become a Mentor?

A:           Mentoring is an extremely rewarding experience because you are making a difference in the life of a very special child.  It’s an impression that will last a lifetime.  Many of our Mentors create long-term friendships with their mentees through which they, themselves, grow personally. Our kids are remarkably resilient and often teach their Mentors some important life lessons, too.  Our program also provides countless opportunities for Mentors to meet new people, participate in exciting group activities and receive tickets to exciting sporting events, shows, concerts and so much more!
