Veteran Executive Carmine Calzonetti Named President Of Tuesday's Children

Carmine Calzonetti, a respected financial services, management and development executive, has been named President of Tuesday’s Children, a non-profit organization that provides a wide range of support programs to 9/11 families. Mr. Calzonetti will be responsible for leading Tuesday’s Children in a new period of program enhancement and growth. The appointment is effective immediately.

A former collegiate athletic league director and securities firm partner and broker, Mr. Calzonetti also served as president of Learning Through Experience, an organization he co-founded in 1999 to provide real life, hands-on alternative education experiences to high school graduates and college students.

Jonathan Barnett, Chairman of Tuesday's Children, said, "Carmine Calzonetti is a rare find - and an ideal fit for our organization. His leadership and clarity of vision will guide Tuesday's Children into new fields of service delivery and greater heights of program excellence."

A Manhattan resident, Mr. Calzonetti is a former partner of Cantor Fitzgerald Securities, a company that sustained great losses in the World Trade Center attacks. He left that firm in 2000, and embarked on a new career as Commissioner of the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. On Sept. 11 2001, the entire group of employees he had recruited for Cantor Fitzgerald lost their lives.

Mr. Calzonetti said, "The unspeakable acts of September 11th brought great sorrow into my life; all of my former colleagues perished. Over the years, as I came to terms with this tragedy, I resolved that one day I would, in some way, help the families and children who lost so much. Accepting this opportunity with Tuesday's Children is the answer I have been searching for.

"Working alongside the dedicated and professional staff at Tuesday's Children, I know we will take our programs to the next level," he added. "As the sixth anniversary approaches, our new challenge is to expand and to reach even more people who have encountered similar tragedies. I look forward to introducing new initiatives in which our families and children can be proactive leaders in lending a helping hand and inspiring hope in others."

David Weild IV, vice chair of the Tuesday's Children board and chairman of the search committee, said, "Carmine is an extraordinarily talented executive. He understands the loss and pain that all 9/11 families still face on a daily basis, and he brings to us an important combination of heart, spirit, and commitment."

As Commissioner for the Division II NCAA New York Collegiate Athletic Conference from 2001 to 2005, Mr. Calzonetti was responsible for managing fiscal policies and budgetary decisions and overseeing compliance, sponsorship and publicity.

A former broker with RMJ Securities, where he was responsible for the purchase of "Eurodollar" contracts for non-American banks located in the US, he also served as Assistant Athletic Director at St. John's University from 1981 to 1993. After earning his Bachelor Degree in Sociology from St. John's University -- where he also played men's basketball - he coached in Europe for 10 years.

Mr. Calzonetti is married to Ramona Sunderwirth, M.D., an emergency pediatrician at St. Luke's Hospital who serves on the Board of Directors of Doctors of the World, among other international charitable organizations. Together, they have six children.

Last year, Tuesday's Children provided programs and services to almost 5,000 individual family members in the New York tri-state area, Washington, DC and Boston. Because of this growing need, expanded and new services, referrals from other families and continued outreach, program participation is expected to increase by 20 percent this year.

Programs offered by Tuesday's Children often provide families a life-line they can find no where else. Among the organization's most effective - and in-demand - programs are Mentoring, Career Paths, First Steps, Getting Well/Staying Well, and Family Engagement events.
