Career Shadow Day at CNN and Bloomberg |
July 18, 2007
New York, New York
Intermittently throughout our daily lives we hear the names CNN and Bloomberg. But have you ever wondered how these two Fortune 500 companies came about? What exactly do they do and could they be represent possible career opportunities? On July 18, 2007, eight young adults uncovered these questions, when they responded to a Tuesday’s Children Career Paths Shadow Day invitation. The trip began with Fran Aun and Claire Calzonetti at CNN. We were given an extensive tour of the cable news network observing the news and control rooms, research floors, numerous studios, all the while learning how CNN covers world news and events around the clock. We met CNN National News correspondent John Roberts and CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck. After lunch in CNN’s cafeteria, which had a magnificent view of Columbus Circle and Central Park, we walked across town to Bloomberg L.P. the financial, news and media giant located on Lexington Avenue and 58th street. Upon our arrival at the Bloomberg building, we were introduced to the company philosophy: “there are no limits, anything is possible.” This philosophy is represented throughout the company, especially in the unique architecture of the building and the magnificent commissioned pieces of art interpreting clouds and stars conveying the theme that the universe is vast and boundless. There are very few solid walls throughout the infrastructure of the building; almost everything is made of glass, a constant reminder that there are no limits, anything is possible. Our fantastic tour finished with a tutorial on the history of the Bloomberg financial information terminal, Bloomberg News and how important premiere customer service is throughout the company. Read two testimonials from our participants... "My impressions of Career Shadow Day is that it was a great experience. It helped me to see how major corporations work in New York City. I was able to see the atmosphere that the employees at Time Warner and Bloomberg enjoy day to day. It opened up my eyes to how many people are actually involved in making sure these two companies stay successful. Many people with many different skills work efficiently and effectively together in order to keep these companies on top. I am very appreciative for having the opportunity to take part in these Career Shadow Day." -- James Farrelly "The tours of CNN and Bloomberg were inspiring and intriguing! I was able to explore a fun, cutting-edge career path— the technology and opportunities were truly incredible. The tour made the careers tangible; I could envision myself, a few years in the future, submerged in the world of communications or finance at one of these locations. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience— I’m so grateful!" -- Elizabeth Moroney
